Long-term love affair with film continues with Brief Encounter
You the audience have chosen Brief Encounter as your favourite love story on film. Once again this year the competition has been extremely tight, with films such as Amélie, West Side Story and Lady and the Tramp, being close runners.
This classic tale of star-crossed lovers possesses some of the most iconic scenes in post-war British cinema, atmospheric black and white cinematography, a Rachmaninoff soundtrack, and a delicate, nuanced Noel Coward screenplay
Brief Encounter (1946) is director David Lean's brilliantly crafted masterpiece and one of the greatest romantic stories of all time. The film follows the arc of a blooming but ultimately frustrated love affair between stars Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard and, fittingly for the “Film on Film” theme of this year’s Festival, features a film within a film when the would-be lovers visit a cinema.
Well received upon its release (the film won the Grand Prize at Cannes and was nominated for three Oscars), this tale of a doomed, illicit love affair set in late thirties small-town Britain still regularly features in critics and audiences’ favourite films lists. (It came second in the British Film Institute’s 1999 poll of the top 100 British films.)
The winner of the Vote for Berwick's Favourite Love Story lucky draw is Tansy Cliff. A 3-course meal for two with a bottle of wine at Amaryllis Restaurant is coming your way!
This competition is now closed. Thank you .
