The Hidden Child is the latest in a wave of extraordinary thrillers to come out of Scandinavia, and is based on a novel by best-selling crime writer Camilla La¨ckberg.
The story takes place – and the film was shot – in the small fishing town of Fja¨llbacka, now best known as La¨ckberg’s home town and the location for many of her books.
Successful author Erica Falck’s parents are killed in a car crash. A year later a man steps into Erica’s house claiming that he is her half-brother, Erica doesn’t believe him and asks him to leave. When he is found murdered a few days later she starts going through her mother’s belongings. She soon discovers that her mother had dark secrets that someone is trying to keep hidden.
The Hidden Child is superbly crafted, building suspense all the way to its climactic ending. Adapted by Maria Karlsson (Easy Money) and produced by Helena Danielsson (Call Girl, Beyond), it features a cast audiences may recognise from Scandinavian dramas ranging from Fanny and Alexander to Everlasting Moments.
We are delighted to welcome director Per Hanefjord and lead actress Claudia Galli Concha from Sweden to Berwick to introduce the film.
“A beautiful, intense and thrilling film. The color palette, the music, the way time periods shift so seamlessly and beautifully, the way the mystery unfolds; what an awesome film.”
